Day trips
There’s plenty to do in Austin, but there’s also a lot of fun things to do that’s just 30 minutes to an hour away. Go on a joy drive and be make frequent stops!
Garrison bros distillery
There are many things to do in Texas Hill Country, but we highly recommend prioritizing Garrison Brothers. It’s the first and oldest legal whiskey distillery in Texas. They give tours from Wednesday - Sunday, but you have to reserve your spot in advance. Then after your visit, skip on over to Burg’s Corner for some fresh fruit; it’s owned by a friend of Sheila’s and they have great peach cider!
Parking is available.
Lockhart bbq
Ollie’s hometown, Lockhart, is called the “BBQ Capitol of Texas” because this tiny town has five BBQ spots. Sheila’s favorite is Smitty’s. If you’re determined to try more than one spot, then we recommend getting one pork rib, one sausage link, and one slice of brisket at each place. It may be tempting to order more, but trust us on this.
San antonio
San Antonio is just an hour away and we’ve been really charmed by it! Skip the riverwalk. Go to the farmer’s market in The Pearl or get some brisket and a side of mac and cheese with chicharrones at 2M, one of the best BBQ spots in Texas. At night, catch live music at Luna where Slow Cooked has played a couple of times.
Enchanted rock state park
Take a hike! No really, there’s 11 miles of hiking to explore. It’s also a magical place for camping, rock climbing and more.
They close when they reach capacity which can be really early, so you can purchase a “Save the Day” pass here up to 30 days before your visit.
Gates open at 6:30 AM and there’s a $7 fee to enter.
